SAINT PAUL – On July 8, 2026, the Office of the Legislative Auditor (OLA) issued their final report evaluating Minnesota’s voter registration system. The report was requested by the Legislative Audit Commission as a follow up to the 2018 OLA Voter Registration Report. 

The 2026 OLA Voter Registration Report found that the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State (OSS) met its responsibility for developing infrastructure, maintaining the Statewide Voter Registration System and providing guidance to local election officials. Further, the report found that local election officials report they are getting adequate guidance from the OSS and receive timely and helpful responses to their questions and concerns.

In addition, the new report found that all recommendations made by the OLA in 2018 that were evaluated by the OLA in 2026 were implemented.

Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon issued the following statement:

“This report highlights the year-round, focused efforts of our office and local election officials to continue provide secure, accurate, and accessible elections for the people of Minnesota.

We are proud the report found our office has established the appropriate procedures for counties and that counties have performed their work with a nearly perfect record of accuracy.

In addition to this OLA report, Minnesota’s election system has been ranked #1 in the country by the MIT Election Performance Index and is highly regarded as the gold standard for balancing accessibility and security.

Of course, with any system there is always room for improvement, and we accept and agree with the few recommendations provided by the OLA to improve our work and have already begun to bring them into implementation.”
