SAINT PAUL — Today, on National Voter Registration Day, Secretary of State Steve Simon is encouraging all eligible Minnesotans who are not yet registered to vote to visit mnvotes.org and register. Minnesotans who are already registered to vote should confirm their voter registration information is up to date, and encourage their friends, family and co-workers to do the same.
"National Voter Registration Day is not just about making sure you’re registered to vote, it’s also about making sure your friends and family are registered to vote," said Secretary of State Steve Simon. "The voter registration process in Minnesota is easier and more convenient than ever before, but there is still work to do. While Minnesota has more than 3.1 million registered voters, there are an additional 800,000 citizens who are eligible but have not yet registered to vote. We must stay restless until every eligible citizen is registered to vote, and uses that vote as their voice."
Minnesotans can register to vote from the comfort of their own home by going online to mnvotes.org. They can register at the polls on Election Day or when applying for or renewing their driver's license. Voter registration applications are also available at every state agency, all 87 county offices throughout the state, and online in English, Hmong, Russian, Somali, Spanish and Vietnamese.
This morning, Secretary Simon will visit Como Park Senior High School in St. Paul to speak with students about the importance of voting and civic engagement. He will also speak at a National Voter Registration Day event hosted by the city of Minneapolis.
National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) is a non-partisan voter registration awareness campaign to encourage voter participation and increase awareness about how to register to vote. Earlier this month, Secretary Simon announced that September had officially been declared "Voter Registration Month" and September 22 "Voter Registration Day" in Minnesota.
This is the first time Minnesota has joined the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) in officially proclaiming NVRD. Secretary Simon and Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill are serving as the NASS representatives to the NVRD Steering Committee for 2015-2016.
