SAINT PAUL – Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon celebrated National Voter Registration Day on September 19 by presenting the Restore the Vote Coalition with the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) medallion, visiting two Minneapolis high schools, and registering students to vote at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.
“Voting is the most powerful tool we have as Americans to determine our own future,” said Secretary Simon. “As we prepare for statewide elections in 2024, I urge Minnesotans to take the time to make sure they are registered to vote or that their voter registration is up-to-date.”
Secretary Simon began National Voter Registration Day by presenting the Restore the Vote Coalition with the NASS Medallion, which honors the organization for its outstanding service and dedication to promoting voter education and participation within Minnesota.
“The Restore the Vote Coalition has worked tirelessly to advocate for Minnesotans and ensure those who are no longer incarcerated can become full participants in our democracy,” said Secretary Simon. “While the coalition celebrates this historic victory, they have continued to work to ensure every newly eligible Minnesotan understands their regained freedom and is empowered to use it.”
Secretary Simon then visited North and Southwest high schools in Minneapolis, where he spoke with students about the importance of voting and the new law that allows 16- and 17-year-old Minnesotans, who would otherwise be eligible to vote, to pre-register to vote in the first election after they turn 18.
“This fall, I have had the opportunity to speak with students across the state and share the news that they can now take part in our democracy earlier than ever before through pre-registration and serving as an election judge trainee,” said Secretary Simon. “I am so heartened by the curiosity and enthusiasm of young people who want to step up, get involved, and look forward to becoming voters.”
Secretary Simon finished the day at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities talking with students and registering new voters.
