Secretary Simon on the 5th Anniversary of the U.S. Capitol Insurrection

January 6, 2026

SAINT PAUL – Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon issued the following statement on the 5th anniversary of the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

SAINT PAUL – Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon issued the following statement on the 5th anniversary of the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol during the joint session of Congress to count electoral votes to formalize the results of the 2020 presidential election. Five people died within days as a result of the attack and 174 police officers were injured.

Secretary Simon’s statement:

“Today, we solemnly remember the act of domestic terrorism at the U.S. Capitol building five years ago which targeted the Vice President and every member of Congress as they did their Constitutionally required duty of certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election.

I continue to be deeply disturbed by the ongoing spread toxic disinformation about what occurred that day, and about America’s elections. Every eligible voter should know that elections in every state and territory are fundamentally fair, accurate, honest, and secure. The place to seek justice is in the courts -- political violence is never a viable option. I commit to strengthening the freedom to vote so that every eligible voter can participate in elections that are at the heart of this nation’s values.”
